Science with Thomas

I wanted to talk a little more about my plans for Thomas' science for next year.

I looked at the scope in the back of my Beyond manuals to see which books have the topics we would be most interested in. I've chosen Neil Armstrong and Thomas Edison.

Thomas used Neil Armstrong for a reader last year and enjoyed it because he likes airplanes. We live not too far from NASA in Huntsville, Alabama, and David has been talking about taking him there to visit the museum. And this book includes a lot of astronomy, which we are woefully deficient in.

I've chosen Thomas Edison just because of the sheer volume of science included in this unit study. And it includes a lot of info about electricity, which should be exciting for him.

I went through each unit and decided which science lessons we will try to do. I want to help him create a notebook with illustrations (he loves to draw), minit books, and short writing assignments. We will do experiments in addition to the lessons in the manual and I'll take pictures for his notebook. I looked through the experiment books I already own and found some for each topic and made a list of what we'll need to carry them out, plus I made a list of supplies and books needed for each chapter. Most things can be found at Walmart or our library or are books I already own.

I also have a list of books about different inventors which tie in to a lot of the chapters in Thomas Edison and I'll try to ILL some of these to use for readers. And we may read aloud other nature/science/inventor books, too, during read aloud weeks.

If you have any other ideas, I'd love to hear them!
